Is the PS5 Pro worth it? What's inside, what PSSR 2 changed, prices and who should buy one
2026-11-03 · Guides
Short answer: the PS5 Pro makes sense if you have a 120 Hz 4K TV and don't want to choose between "quality" and "performance". All games run on both the standard PS5 and the Pro, and the Pro has no exclusives. The difference is in image quality and smoothness, and it became more noticeable after the PSSR 2 update in March 2026. But the price went up after April 2, 2026, too.
What's inside, according to Sony

- Graphics. Sony describes "advanced ray tracing": ray-traced reflections, shadows and global illumination where the standard PS5 can't manage them.
- PSSR, or PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI upscaler: a game renders at a lower resolution and is upscaled to 4K. Games that support it have an Enhance PSSR Image Quality toggle in settings.
- 2 TB of storage, compared with 825 GB on the original PS5 (the system takes up some of it). To expand any PS5, see how to expand your PS5 storage.
- Wi-Fi 7, support for 60 and 120 Hz screens, and up to 120 fps in supported games.
- Game Boost for PS4 and PS5, which gives older games a more stable frame rate.
- No disc drive in the box. It's sold separately, as with the PS5 Digital.
- Over 100 games labeled PS5 Pro Enhanced, according to Sony's official page, including Cyberpunk 2077, Crimson Desert and Assassin's Creed Shadows.
What the PSSR 2 update changed
In March 2026, Sony released firmware with a new version of the upscaler, known as PSSR 2. According to Push Square and Notebookcheck, the update came out on March 16 and immediately affected more than ten games, including Crimson Desert, Silent Hill f and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. In its analysis of Resident Evil Requiem and Silent Hill f, Digital Foundry noted that the "halos" behind moving objects, the main complaint about the first version of PSSR, were gone. Assassin's Creed Shadows and Alan Wake 2 later got PSSR 2 patches. If a game supports PSSR, you don't have to enable anything separately: all you need is the updated firmware and the toggle in settings.
Any game in the Matrix Store catalog works the same on a standard PS5 and on a Pro, and Pro mode turns on by itself.
Sony's prices
At launch on November 7, 2024: $699.99, €799.99, £699.99. On April 2, 2026, Sony raised its list prices: the PS5 Pro is now $899.99 / €899.99 / £789.99 / ¥137,980, the standard PS5 with a disc drive is $649.99, and the PS5 Digital is $599.99. The company's stated reason is "pressures in the global economic landscape". The gap between a Pro and a standard PS5 is about the price of three or four games at full price.
Who should buy a Pro, and who shouldn't

1. Buy a Pro if you have a 4K TV with 120 Hz and VRR, you play big new releases with ray tracing, and you're annoyed by choosing between 30 fps in a pretty mode and a blurry image in a fast one.
2. Buy a Pro if you're building a digital library: 2 TB settles the storage question for a couple of years.
3. Don't buy a Pro if your TV is Full HD or 4K without 120 Hz, because you won't see most of the difference. A standard PS5 runs the same games.
4. Don't buy a Pro if you mainly play PS4 games, indies and sports sims, which already run at a stable 60 fps. The price difference is better spent on games and a subscription.
FAQ
- Do I need a new TV? No, the Pro works with any HDMI TV, but its full potential shows on 4K 120 Hz.
- Do games and saves transfer from a PS5? Yes, through a data transfer over a network or cable, as between any two PS5 consoles. PS Plus cloud saves work too. See how to transfer data to a new PS5.
- Do Game Sharing and purchases on your own account work? Yes. Accounts and licenses don't depend on the console model.
- Is a PS6 coming? Sony hasn't officially announced a date. The Pro is a mid-generation update, not a replacement.
